Welcome back to the golden age of the internet!
The 2000s were another colourful era. This was a time of obsession over futurism, high-tech and CGI.
This was also the time when Social Media started to emerge.
Characteristics of this era's style are:
- metallic and chromatic textures
- holographic and translucent surfaces
- gloss and liquid effects
- futuristic and techonological elements
- irregular shapes
- usage of CGI renders
- "hacking" and "Matrix" aesthetics
- extensive usage of Flash
Some of the things I noticed with websites of this era is that they loved using irregularly-shaped containers. I also noticed that there was often a very prominent contrast between the background and font colours.
This style also continued the tradition of using fixed page containers.
This style is usually referred to as the Y2K style (Y2K = the year 2 thousand). Also known as the Y2K Futurism, Cybercore, and Chromecore.

The 2000s web was a fever dream of synthetic optimism — interfaces dripping with liquid chrome, Flash animations that whirred like holograms, and gradients so radiant they felt radioactive. It wasn’t just decoration; it was faith in tech’s infinite cool. Here, the future wasn’t minimalist — it was a maximalist playground where every page screamed: "Look what the internet can DO!" it was long before flat design sterilized the fun.
